I received the following e-mail from a friend recently and I thought I would share it with you. I do not know it’s origin and some of you may have already seen it. As we grow older, and hence wiser, we slowly realize that wearing a $300 or $30 watch —-they both tell the same time. Whether we carry a $300 or $30 wallet/handbag —- the amount of money inside is the same. Whether we drink a bottle of $300…..
LET IT START WITH ME. Give me the courage to do the right things and the wisdom to know what the right things are. I want to preserve our America and be able to pass it on to future generations, but those that we pass it on to must understand our values in order to preserve our country and way of life. It does take a village and a lot of help from those around us to have success in…..
LIFE IS FULL OF DREAMS, fulfilled and unfulfilled. As we go through life we have many challenges. How we handle these challenges determines who we are. In my book MILES FROM HOME I talk about how lonely I was when I was staying with my grandfather on the farm. It was a difficult time in my life and I dreamed of having someone to love me. In my mind or my dreams I could see me with different girls that…..
WALKING ON A HIGHWAY IS NOT SAFE ! While walking is the best exercise, where you walk is also extremely important. Impaired and distracted drivers are by far the greatest danger when walking on the highways. BREATHING CARBON MONOXIDE that comes from the exhaust of the cars and trucks can not be very good for your health either. In my book Miles From Home I talk a little bit about the hazards of walking on the highways. It seems there…..
Yes, I had help walking across America. I could not have made it without the help of my wife, Carole Woods. She had many jobs, she drove the Chuck Wagon as we had to have food and water on hand when I was hungry or thirsty. She had to make sure the truck had enough gas to last us all day. On real hot days the engine would run all day to keep her cool or warm. It also felt…..
Some of my early memories involving alcohol was my father making Home Brew, a beer that was made in his special 10 gallon UHL crock. As I recall, it would take about a week for this brew to be ready to consume. The next step was to bottle and cap the beer. Yeast was used in the process of making the brew and if it was still active when they bottled the stuff, it would make the bottles explode after…..
Our youth is America’s most valuable asset. We must nurture, protect and educate our youth “ ALL OUR YOUTH “. Reforming our educational system will be very difficult as we have too many people and institutions with differing views on how to achieve the best results. It starts with: THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT: The Federal Government should set the objectives and standards for education in America. It is then the obligation of the rest of us to try to attain that…..
An article in the August 16th, 2015, editorial section of my local newspaper, the “NDN”, written by a gentleman named Thomas Hughes, could have been written by me. I must share it with you. Patriotism is a word seldom heard in our culture anymore. Unfortunately, our love for America has changed over the years, which has even effected its definition. Noah Webster’s “ An American Dictionary of the English Language “ of 1828 defines patriotism as “love of one’s country;…..
As I write these stories I realize its been 5 years since I’ve blogged. I hope to blog longer this time and maybe do a better job. My thought processes currently tell me not a lot of progress has been made in the reforms I hoped would begin by now. There does not seem to be the will to tackle our real problems. This is not good for America. Let us keep doing our acts of Kindness toward each other…..
The idea Why did I write Miles from Home – The Journey of a Lifetime ? The idea to tell my story came from some of my family members who wanted to know more about our history and my own desire to leave something behind. As I approached my senior years, if I was ever going to do it, the time had come. It was very hard to relive some of my life, but with good mentors and people around…..
