Yes, I had help walking across America. I could not have made it without the help of my wife, Carole Woods.
She had many jobs, she drove the Chuck Wagon as we had to have food and water on hand when I was hungry or thirsty. She had to make sure the truck had enough gas to last us all day.
On real hot days the engine would run all day to keep her cool or warm. It also felt good to me when I would take a break. Sometimes I called her ” Nurse Woods “ as she would take care of my blisters when I would get one or two.
If my shoes were fitting my feet right and were comfortable they would kind of massage my feet as I walked. However, if I failed to put them on properly, after a while my feet would start complaining and I ended up with blisters. When I would catch up to the truck Nurse Carole would take care of me. If I needed a foot rub she was always accommodating.
Another job she had was securing us a place to stay. We never had advanced reservations because we never knew how far we would get. Usually by 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon she would start thinking about where we were going to stay. We tried to stay where there was a washer and dryer so she could do the laundry.
We often times went into the night to get all our work in. Carole took all the pictures and had to send them in every night to be put on the blog. People whom we engaged and followed us on the Webb would be exited to see themselves the next day on the blog.
We are now heading for 57 years of marriage, so we know each other pretty well. After I would take a break, Carole would stay put for about an hour then drive ahead approximately 5 miles. As she passed me if I needed her to stop, I would hold up my hand. If not, she would go on down the road for another 2 0r 3 miles and wait on me. One day I criticized where she had parked along side the road, thinking safety. The next time she parked a mile or two on down the road. I knew my criticism was not well received, I thought for sure she had left my ass and we were in the middle of nowhere. My mind played tricks on me as i walked those extra miles. I had learned my lesson, no more criticism. I was so very glad to see the old black truck off in the distance.
Nurse Carole earned her stripes every day.
